A Good Marriage

Lizzie Kitsakis’ life is a mess. She’s putting in long, boring hours doing work she hates at a stuffy corporate law firm. She had to leave her dream job as a public prosecutor behind, because her sweet, adorable, alcoholic, out-of-work husband Sam has landed them in serious financial trouble and she needs the big-firm paycheck. Late one July evening, she gets a collect call from Riker’s Island. A formerly close friend from her law school days, Zach Grayson, now a successful tech entrepreneur, is under arrest; his beautiful young wife Amanda has just been found dead in a pool of blood in their opulent Park Slope townhouse, and he’s the prime suspect. Lizzie hasn’t been in touch with Zach for a decade, and has no intention of representing him, let alone defending him on a murder charge, but much to her surprise, the senior partner she reports to wants her to take the case.

Meanwhile, the snooty Brooklyn Country Day private school Zach and Amanda’s son attends has had a cybersecurity breach, and parents and students—including Amanda’s closest friends—are getting harassing emails from the hackers. The night of Amanda’s death, she and Zach attended a scandalous annual party where normally uptight Park Slope parents cut loose while their kids are away at summer camp.

A Good Marriage weaves together the past and present stories of Lizzie and Sam, Amanda and Zach, examining the complexities of how different couples navigate their relationships. How well do we really know those closest to us, and how much of ourselves do we honestly reveal in return? The characters are well-drawn and relatable, at times brave, at others deeply flawed. The various plot threads diverge and reconnect in unexpected ways, from the first page to the unexpected, but satisfying conclusion.
