Killer Thriller

by Lee Goldberg
Thomas & Mercer, February 2019, $24.95

In 2018's True Fiction, thriller writer Ian Ludlow, author of the bestselling Clint Straker novels (think about an over-the-top version of James Bond meets Jack Reacher, if you can), and jaded author escort Margo French, found themselves running for their lives, fleeing from a private black ops firm which sought to assume control of America's spy network, surviving only due to luck and Ian's mutant power to plot thrillers. In their second joint adventure, the pair again find themselves facing sudden death, as they become enmeshed in a web of intrigue spun by a Chinese intelligence agency that seeks to compromise top US officials. Deadly, and often hilarious, hijinks ensue.

Like True Fiction, Killer Thriller is a great read, jam-packed with compelling characters, thrilling set pieces, laugh-out-loud humor, and plenty of affectionate jabs at thrillers, both literary and cinematic. Ian and Margo actually grow as characters, as Ludlow channels real life experiences into fiction, and vice versa, and Margo...well, I'll leave that as a welcome surprise for readers. Suffice it to say that Lee Goldberg has done it again, delivering a fast, funny, knowing, sometimes subversive thriller, that should appeal to a broad spectrum of readers, especially those who appreciate generous portions of humor thrown into the mix.
